Safari Ingredients

What makes for a good Safari? Or even a super Safari?

Obviously, the first consideration is where one goes. Africa is a huge continent and not all of it is “Safari Country”. So selecting a destination known for it’s wildlife is important. Equally important is structuring an itinerary to create an experience that builds and progresses.

Accommodations are a major factor, depending on the nature of the Safari. A camping Safari needs good equipment and an experienced staff. A lodge Safari should consider convenience and comfort.

Guides and drivers, rangers and trackers -- those who know a given area intimately, can spot and identify animals under difficult circumstances, and are able to interpret spoor and behavior--are critical.

All of the elements above are part of the Safari planning process, which is based on experience, knowledge, research and consultation. Most of the time logistics go well, large numbers of animals are seen, and everyone brings back fabulous photos and a lifetime of memories.

But, believe it or not, these things do not guarantee a good Safari. All of these elements can fall into place perfectly, uncontrollable aspects (such as weather or animal migratory patterns) can be ideal, and a Safari can be less than perfect.
So, what does it then make a successful Safari?
In my opinion, the most critical factor for a good Safari -- and especially for a Fabulous Safari -- is the people behind it. One can actually agree that, you can only be able to give people what you have and hence an excellent company is only as good as its staff! The ‘best safari staff’ are those who, when for instance something happens to go wrong, would roll with the punches and make the best of every unexpected eventualities. That’s the key to a Super Safari Team!
